Spira Mirabilis Staircase

Spira Mirabilis Staircase

Philosopher and mathematician René Descartes first discovered the logarithmic spiral in the early seventeenth century. A few decades later, mathematician Jacob Bernoulli became so fascinated with the shape that he named it Spira Mirabilis (Latin for “miraculous spiral”) and had it etched on his gravestone.

This staircase, captured from the base, caught my eye as an embodiment of this magical shape that we find both in natural and manmade objects.
